Vansyckle, age 85, of Greenville, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 16, 1920 in Barryton to Joseph and Edith Adam Vansyckle. Howard married Shirley Ruth Redman on August 27, 1945 in Greenville. Howard and Shirley celebrated 59 years of marriage in August 2004. He served his country in the U.S. Army with the 126th Infantry Co. E from Big Rapids. He earned a Purple Heart while fighting in New Guinea, the Philippine Islands and Papuan East Indies. He also earned several other medals of valor for his service in the Pacific where he was one of a few men from Company E in the Red Arrow Division to survive the steamy jungles in the Battle of Buna in the Papuan Campaign. Company E served a record 654 days of combat in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. His country will be forever grateful for the sacrifice of the many men of Company E from Big Rapids. Howard was an auto mechanic in Greenville for many years, working at the former Vito Buick-Oldsmobile Auto Dealership. He was also a great supporter of his five sons and all their athletic participation in Greenville Schools. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, their five sons, and families; Thomas (Judy) Vansyckle, and Robert (Kristie) Vansyckle of Greenville, James (Kathy) Vansyckle of Ionia, Gerald (Patti) Vansyckle of Gowen, now serving with his son Ben in the Michigan National Guard #1073 in Iraq, and Douglas (Carrie) Vansyckle of Canadian Lakes; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeff) Myers, Todd (Jamie) Vansyckle, Toby (Tina) Vansyckle, Heather (Jim) Ebels, Tyler, Justin (Anna) Vansyckle, Amy (Rob) Johnson, Ben (Carmen) Vansyckle and Jordan Vansyckle; great-grandchildren Karli, Kory, Kaden, Lindsay, Levi Howard, Megan, A.L., Vaughn, Audrey, Hayden, Halle and Collin. He is also survived by his brothers, Raymond (Lorraine) Vansyckle of Paris, Bill Vansyckle of Barryton, and Wally Vansyckle of Hersey, his sisters, Lela Spicer of Baldwin, Judy Olson of Rodney, Carlene and Dick Cupet of Swartz Creek, and Zoa Spaulding of Greenville; his wife’s family, Betty Baker of Big Rapids, Barb Weaver and Mike and Bonnie Redman all of Gladwin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Jesse, Rex, Lewis and Lee and his sisters Alice Schaffer, Evelyn Bongard and Marian Kushmal. Memorial services are Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Greenville Community Church with Pastors Wayne Otto and Tom Hansen officiating. Visitation begins two hours prior to memorial services at 11 a.m. Military Honors will be provided by the Michigan National Guard. Burial will be at a later date in Rest Haven Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenville Community Church or Visiting Nurses Hospice. Hurst Funeral home is serving the Vansyckle family.
