December 9, 2025 Excerpts from Ionia Obituary JAMES PAUL VANSYCKLE Died Saturday December 6, 2025-age 76 of Ionia, surrounded by his family. Born October 6, 1949, so of Howard & Shirley Redman VanSyckle in Greenville, MI. Married in 1988 to Kathryn Campbell VanSyckle. Survived by his wife, Kathryn, his three children,Tyler (Kelly) VanSyckle, Justin(Haley Perrin)VanSyckle, Anna VanSyckle; grandchildren Jacob & Lilyth VanSycklel, brothers Tom(Judy) VanSyckle, Bob VanSyckle, Doug (Carrie) VanSyckle & sister-in-law Patti VanSyckle, his twin-brother. Preceded in death by his twin-brother, Gerry VanSyckle & his parents. Jim graduated from Greenville High School in 1968 & studied at Montcalm Community College where he played both basketball & baseball. He was drafted & served his country in Korea as a member of the U.S. Army & honorably discharged in 1972, He attended Michigan State University on the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1975, then began his career as a public-school teacher & coach in Ionia. He dedicated 37 years as a middle school teacher & 44 years coaching a variety of sports, primarily basketball & track & field. Was inducted into the Ionia Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021. In 2022 received the William B. Lincoln Educator Award. Enjoyed frequent family visits to the UP for hiking & chasing waterfalls, time at the beach & sitting around the campfire. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home, Ionia with visitation Tuesday, December 16, 2025 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. Funeral Services will be at First Presbyterian Church in Ionia, where Jim was a long-time member on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 11:00 am with Rev. Dr.Christopher Dorn officiating.
