The Hastings Reminder, May 8, 2007


Dr. Allison Lynn Van Zyl, DDS, aged 81, of Lake Odessa, passed away on Sunday 
evening, April 29, 2007.

Al was born in Holland on March 15, 1926 to Gerrit and Bertha (Brower) Van 
Zyl.  He graduated from Holland High School in 1943, and then served in the 
U.S. Army Air Corps.  Following his discharge, he enrolled at Hope College and 
graduated in 1950.  Al continued his education at the University of Michigan 
Dental School, graduating in 1954.  

He was united in marriage to Carol Prigge on June 22, 1949.  Al and Carol 
moved to Lake Odessa in 1955 where Doc practiced dentistry for the next 36 
years.  Doc loved fishing, golfing, and playing cards.  He was a long-time 
member of the Lake Odessa Lions Club, and served on the Board of Directors of 
Union Bank in Lake Odessa.  Al had been a member of the Central United 
Methodist Church in Lake Odessa where he had generously served wherever he was 
needed.

He is survived by his children, Debra and Steve Steward, Bradly and Jill Van 
Zyl, Emmi Jo “Jodi” and Tim Spitzley, and Dr. Craig and Angie Van Zyl; 11 
grandchildren; three great grandsons; and sister, Verna Ruth Post.  Al was 
preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol; and brothers, Neil Van Zyl and 
Gyte Van Zyle.  

The funeral service was held on Friday, May 4, 2007 at the Koops Funeral 
Chapel.  Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery.  The family has suggested that 
memorial contributions may be made to the Central United Methodist Church of 
Lake Odessa.
