She as born in Flushing Deb. 3, 1919, to Arthur and Mabel (Tarry) West. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a member and past president of the Portland VEW Post 4090 Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Vashaw went back to high school to receive her diploma in 1973 after raising her family. She loved to play bingo and shop and she enjoyed making craft items and crocheting, but her greatest love was flowers. She had a definite “green thumb,” and loved the garden when she was able. Arlene felt her greatest accomplishment was her family, whom she loved very much, and we will miss her. If there’s an “Exchange” counter in Heaven, This woman is there.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; son, James; granddaughter, Kristen; and great grandson Aaron. Surviving are her children, Jack Vashaw, Pat (Joan) Vashaw, Bonnie (Wally) Czaika, and Darlene (Wayne) Schrauben, all of Portland, and Valerie (Paul) Fisher of Luther; 14 grandchildren (special helper, Andy); 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Brinningstaull; sister-in- law, Thelma West; brother-in-law, Frank (Ev) Vashaw; and special friend, Snoop. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Charles D. Hall, pastor, Oct. 26 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Portland. Rite of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery.
