Vaughn, 74, of Saranac, who would have observed his golden wedding anniversary Christmas day, died suddenly early Sunday morning as he went down cellar at his home to stoke the furnace. A heart attack was the cause of death. For a half century Mr. Vaughn had been in the grocery business in Saranac, for the past eight years as manager of the Kroger store there. He served 33 years on the Saranac board of education of which he was treasurer and was postmaster for eight years, from 1912 to 1920, during the Wilson administration. He was a member of Ionia commandery, Knights Templar, of Hooker Chapter F and A. M. of Lowell, and of the Saranac Blue Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. He was born May 8, 1862 in Warnersville, N. Y., and was six years old when his parents moved to Stanton. In 1886 he went to Saranac. Surviving him are three sons, Clifford and Harold of Grand Rapids, and Charles of Saranac, and two daughters, Mrs. J. P. Billinger and Mrs. Fred Burletson of Saranac. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home with burial at the Saranac cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn had planned a dinner party at Green Gables in observance of their golden wedding anniversary Christmas day, and a reception at their Saranac home in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn, formerly Miss Nellie Holcomb of Cannonsburg were married at Saranac, December 25, 1886. For a number of years Mr. Vaughn clerked for the late Henry Frace and then formed a partnership with Arden Otis and opened a grocery store. Upon his appointment as postmaster the grocery store was sold to Dale K. Jepson. Mr. Vaughn was village clerk several terms.
