Washington, Ionia, died Wednesday at his residence. He was celebrating his 87th birthday. He was born May 25, 1896 in Breckenridge, the son of Frank and Harriet Packard Velia. He served in the United States Army during World War I and worked for the Pere Marquette Railroad company for several years. He worked at several farms in Ionia County and for many years attended the Max Stebbins horses at the Ionia Free Fair. He was often seen driving a pony pulled cart around Ionia and in the fair parades. He was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul church and the American Legion. He is survived by one sister; Mrs. Rose Smith of St. Louis, Mich., and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Rosemary Westover of Ionia. One sister, Grace Schieble, preceded him in death December 11, 1962. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 p.m. from the SS. Peter and Paul church with Rev. Father Henry Dondzila officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. A scriptural rosary will be read on Thursday at 8 p.m. from the Leddick Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends on Thursday evening at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial has been established for the SS.
