Mr. Velte was a great lover of flowers, his hobby for several years back having been the development of quite an extensive flower garden on his vacant lots just across the street east from his residence. A great many different varieties might be seen blooming there throughout the entire summer season. His favorites, however, seemed to be those in the gladiolus family, practically an entire village lot having been devoted to the culture of that group. Hardly a season passed by but that he had several gladiolus entries at the Ionia Free fair and they brought him many prizes. Unintentionally omitted from our write-up about Mr. Velte in The Wave-Times of last week was that he was a member of the Lake Odessa Lions club. He had also been a member of the old Commercial club, and in fact, all of the different business men’s organizations in the village since he came here. He also had served in various official capacities in these groups and the brotherhoods. He had been actively identified in an official capacity in the Tri-County Fair association of thirty years ago. Among those from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral were the Misses Anna and Emma Velte, John and Charles Velte, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schaibley, Mr. and Mrs. William Velte, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Velte and son Richard, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bates, Miss Bertha Wagner, and Miss Olga Eckardt, all of Woodland; Mrs. Anna Schelter of Woodbury, Mr. and Mrs. James R. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Phill Sullivan, and Mr. and Mrs. Con Sullivan, of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. John Sullivan of Ionia, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sullivan, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stebbins, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Conoway, of Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Drayton of Dayton, Ohio. Derby, cashier of the Maynard-Allen State bank at Portland, Fred Rowe and William Traynick from the Valley City Milling company at Portland, and Byron Ayres of the American Life Insurance company in Detroit.
