Nov. 1, 1918 PAUL VETTER DIES AT LOUISVILLE, KY. Pneumonia from Influenza. Death comes Thursday 9:30 a.m.. Parents, sister and friend in Louisville. Shortly afternoon Thursday the message came that Paul Vetter died at 9:30 the same morning at a hospital in Louisville, Ky., where he had been transferred from Kelley Field, Texas, for special officer's training at Camp Taylor in Kentucky. Saturday upon the receipt of a telegram from the commanding officer, Mr. Vetter started for his son's bedside. On Wednesday noon a telegram came for Mrs. Vetter and Isabel, who left on the one o'clock train, Miss Linda Scheidt of Lansing accompanying them. The trouble was pneumonia brought on by taking cold. Previous to the message from the commanding officer came a letter from the bunk mate of Paul's because of a lameness of the arms caused by a hard cold, but that there was nothing to worry about. Mr. Vetter secured a special nurse for Paul as soon as one could be found, and all things were possible were done but to no avail. The Vetter's arrived home Friday and the body came Saturday accompanied by Sergeant Evans, an officer of the same rank as Paul. A private funeral was held at the home on Monday, James Crawley of Hastings giving the F. & A.M. burial service. Rev. L. L. Steadman of Breckenridge a former pastor, officiated. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. OBITUARY Jerome Paul Vetter was born May 5, 1894, in Toledo, Ohio. His education was received at the following schools; Toledo, Eastern High School, Detroit, and Ferris Institute, Big Rapids. He was a partner in the Vetter Furniture and Hardware Company here, and although young was of an ambitious nature. He enlisted October 1,1917, in the Michigan State Constabulary and on December 7, he enlisted in the aviation section of the U. S. Regular Army. January 7, 1918 he was appointed Sergeant first class of 242 Aero Quadron signal Corps. U. S. Regular Army, Kelley Field, Texas. August 15, 1918 he was transferred to Co. F 3rd Infantry, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. October 18, 1918 he was transferred to the Central Field Artillery Officer's Training at Camp Taylor, Ky. Paul was one of a class of four out of 175 men chosen for the officer's training school. It was while en route for this training school that he contracted the cold which ended in pneumonia after just two days in the training camp work. He died Thursday morning and was accompanied home by Sergeant Evans, a personal friend and brother officer. Paul was a member in good standing of the F. & A.M., No. 395, of this place.
