Vohlers, aged 64 years and prominent throughout Ionia county, passed away at his home in Ionia Thursday morning following several years of ill health. Somewhat more than a year ago Mr. Vohlers went through with a critical operation which was thought at the time to have been successful. Mr. Vohlers was born in Bay City and when a small boy came with his parents to this county, settling near Dildine. In 1884 he was married to Altha Leach and they resided on the Leach farm, which he afterward purchased. He was a staunch member of the Democratic party and twice was its candidate for sheriff. In one of the elections the vote was so close that many people were of the opinion that Mr. Vohlers would have been elected had a recount and taken. He had served his township for several terms as supervisor and for a time was in the service of the county as road maintenance supervisor. Funeral services were largely attended and were held at Ionia Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with Rev. E.E. Branch, an old friend, of Grand Rapids, officiating, and burial was in the family lot in Easton cemetery. Surviving are the widow, three daughters, Mrs. Grace Niles and Mrs. Lila Johnson of Lowell, and Mrs. Mildred Brindle of Palm Beach, Florida; a brother, E.E. Vohlers, of Willoughby, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. J.A. Bremen of Easton township and Mrs. Jacob Wiersma of Grand Rapids. Mr. Vohlers was a splendid fellow to meet and he had a legion of acquaintances and friends all over the county and the entire state who will regret to learn of his passing.
