Vosper Passes Away At Home Here Death Ends Long and Active Life of One of Ionia’s Most Prominent Citizens. Was Local Attorney, Lumberman Many Years. Funeral Service to Be Held from Home Saturday; Burial at Highland Park. Benjamin Vosper passed away this morning at his home on East Main street, his death ending a long illness of heart disease. He was in his eighty fourth year, having celebrated his eighty-third birthday May 14. With the passing of Mr. Vosper, Ionia loses one of its oldest and best loved citizens, a man who was prominent in all civic enterprises during his long and active life. Benjamin Vosper was born May 14, 1844, on a farm in Boston township, the son of Richard and Margaret Vosper. He received his elementary education in the district schools of that neighborhood. He later went to the Michigan State Normal school and, after completing the course of study there, entered the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Graduating from the university in the class of 1867, he opened a law office in Holland, Mich., where he stayed until 1871. He then moved to Ionia and engaged in active practice of law. Besides his law practice he had extensive lumbering interests in partnership with his brother James, and was also interested in mining properties in the upper peninsula. At the outbreak of the Civil war, Mr. Vosper joined his father and brother in offering his services in the Union cause, enlisting in 1862 as a sergeant in the twenty-first Michigan Volunteer infantry. He . . . [two missing lines] . . ., and served for more than two years, receiving his discharge on account of disability. He returned at once to the university, where he completed his studies in the law department. On May 7, 1873, he was united in marriage to Lucia A. Blanchard, of Ionia, the daughter of John C. and Harriet A. Blanchard. To this union one child was born, Blanche M., who is now deceased. She was the wife of Harry M. Morgan, of Buffalo, N.Y. Both Mr. and Mrs. Vosper have been leaders for many years in the study and practice of practical Christianity in Ionia. Their home has been the meeting place each week of a class in divine science. Surviving him are his widow, his brother James, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Clark of Grand Rapids. The funeral service will be held from the home, 267 East Main street, Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial will be in the Highland Park cemetery.
