July 20, 2017 MARTHA VOVILLA 1933-2017 On July 13, 1933, Martha "Jean" VoVilla was born Martha Jean Pullen to Seaborn Wright and Mini Mae Pullen. One of three, Jean's twin sister Mary Joyce and their older brother Jerry enjoyed happy childhoods in Anniston, Alabama. At the age of just 17, Jean had become a talented typist and was recruited from her high school to work for the purchasing department of the U.S. Army. It was there she met Lt. Harold K. VoVilla-better known as "Vo". They fell in love and were married on base in November, 1957. Two years later, in 1959 they gave birth to their first child Matthew K. VoVilla. The Army family of three traveled the world and in 1961 while stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, the family grew to four when Jean gave birth to their baby girl, Kristine K. VoVilla -now Kristine K. Oblinger. In the 1970's, after Vo had risen in the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel, the family retired in Saranac, Michigan, bringing with them their Crimson Tide pride. Their son, Matthew, went on to have a family in California where their beloved grandsons Michael and Robert were born. In Michigan, Kristine gave birth to two granddaughters Vanessa and Katarina. Jean was a loving mother and grandmother to the family created. Visiting California regularly and living just up the street from the girls, she helped raise the grandchildren like they were her own. To everyone who met her, Jean was like family. From the ladies in her bridge club, to her husband's military comrades, she loved everyone unconditionally. Jean lived to laugh and adored children and animals. On Saturday, July 15, she passed away in Grand Rapids surrounded by family. She is survived by her children, Kristine Oblinger, Matthew VoVilla and his wife Leslie, her grandchildren Katarina Oblinger, Vanessa Oblinger, Michael VoVilla and Robert VoVilla and her feisty grand dog, Cujo. Funeral services for Jean will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 11 a, m. at the Galilee Baptist Church in Saranac with Pastor Andy Mooren officiating. Interment Saranac Cemetery.
