H. Vunk was the scene of his funeral last Friday. The attendance was large, and the expressions of sorrow were universal. Flowers in great abundance gave silent testimony to the love borne for the deceased and gave promise of everlasting summer in the land to which our friend has gone. Rev. Arthur Trott of the Portland Methodist Church, of which Mr. Vunk was a member, officiated. Deceased was born in New York state December 29, 1836, and died in Portland township December 28, 1909. He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting August 20, 1862, and serving until June, 1865, when he was honorably discharged. In 1867 he was married to Margaret Spracker, who survives him. Three children were born to them, Silas and Harry, who are successful young farmers, and Cora, who has made a success as a teacher. Mr. Vunk came to Maple in 1876 and for seven years leased his present farm, at the expiration of which time he became its owner. During his residence there he was successful, acquiring 275 acres of choice land, some of which is now owned by his two sons. Many improvements were made and in 1898? he built a modern farm home. He was a member of the G.A.R. post at Portland, the members of which conducted the burial service at the grave. The following comrades acted as pallbearers: J.C. Blackstone, Wm. Miner, Jason Woodbury, Samuel McVeigh, Mr. Hollis, Vincent Taylor, all of Portland. Friends from Belding, Lyons, Portland and other places were present at the funeral. His brother, Alonzo Vunk, of Detroit, was unable to be present on account of his age. Deceased was highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends and his character was such as to call forth the highest degree of praise.
