August 19, 1918 ANOTHER LANDMARK ENTERS REST HAVEN One of the oldest Pioneers. Present at Organizations Sebewa Township, Served in Civil War in 1863. Uncle Tom Waddle as he was familiarly known answered the great Roll Call last Monday soon when he closed his eyes to all things earthly and passed to his last rest. He was born in New York City and came with his parents at the age of nine years to the territory which is now Sebewa township and remembered well the organization of the township being present at a dinner served on the occasion. He answered his county's call for men in the Civi War and served through the latter part of 1863, receiving an honorable discharge. He has been for many years a very familiar figure on our streets always coming for the mail as long as health permitted. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the home of his nephew, James Nicol. The sermon by Rev. E.L. Prentice and Mrs Prentice and Mrs Usborn sang. Burial took place in Lakeside cemetery. OBITUARY Thomas Waddle, born in New York City, September 14, 1832, departed this life April 8, 1918, at the age of 85 years, six months and 24 days. He moved with his parents to Michigan in 1841 at the age of 9 years, locating in the township of Sebewa, Ionia county. On the 25th of December, 1859, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pelton and to this union no children were born.He answered his country's call during the latter part of 1863, being in Company E, 27th Michigan Infantry, serving with Gen. Grant through the Wilderness. At the close of the war he returned to Sebewa where he continued to live until he moved to Lake Odessa 27 years ag. At the death of his wife, February 8, 1908, he took up his residence with his nephew Jim Nicol in Sunfield, later removing with them to Lake Odessa. He was a member of the G.A.R., here in the village for many years. He leaves to mourn his loss several nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
