Nov. 19, 1914 MRS. F. L. WAGAR’S DEATH WAS SUDDEN SHE WAS DAUGHTER OF THE LATE JUDGE WILLARD B. WELLS AND An Ionia Girl – Died Monday at the Family Home in Washington, D. C. – Burial Saturday in Ionia – Interment Highland Park. The news of the death of Mrs. Fred L. Wagar was not only unlooked for here, but a shock to many of the older residents of the city who in the earlier days were neighborly acquaintances of the Wells family, when Judge Wells lived in the home he built at the corner of East Main and South Jefferson streets. Nanta Wells Wagar, wife of Fred L. Wagar, died at their home in Washington, D. C. as previously announced in The Sentinel, last Monday night Nov. 16. Her death was sudden and unexpected, and the first intimation came in a message to her sister, Mrs. R. Lee Page announcing her critical illness. Mrs. Page left on the Monday afternoon train, arriving in Washington Tuesday after the death occurred. The funeral party will arrive in Ionia Friday evening, those accompanying the remains being the husband, Fred L. Wagar, daughter, Miss Portia and son, “H. R.,” Ernest E. Wagar, brother of Mr. Wagar, and Mrs. R. Lee Page, sister. The parents of Fred L. Wagar, Hon. and Mrs. H. R. Wagar, who were in Washington for the winter, will not come to Ionia. The funeral service here will be conducted by Rev. A. R. Mitchell of St John’s Episcopal church, from the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Lee Page, East Main street Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. The remains will be placed in the Wagar mausoleum at Highland Park cemetery, being carried there by Ernest S. Wagar, Herbert B. Webber, Herman Van Allen, C. B. Wardle, O. S. Wood and Fred A. Stiven. As stated the death of Mrs. Wagar was sudden but at this time the particulars were not known in Ionia. She was the daughter of Judge Willard B. Wells and grew to womanhood in Ionia, being a lady very highly esteemed by all who enjoyed her acquaintance. She graduated from the Ionia schools and was married to Mr. Wagar in the Wells home above referred to, the couple going to Washington to make their home. The immediate surviving members of the family are the husband, their daughter and son, Portia and “H, R., sister, Mrs. R. Lee Page and one brother, Maurice Wells of Portland who is critically ill and unable to make the trip to Michigan to attend the funeral.
