Miss Nettie Wagner Succumbs to the Grim Reaper, Death. It becomes our sad duty this week to chronicle the death of one of Belding’s bright young people, one that was universally respected and esteemed, and whose loss causes a feeling of sadness and gloom to prevade the entire city. Miss Nettie Eunice Wagner was born June 1, 1877, at Eastmanville, Mich., where her parents at that time resided and lived there until their removal to Belding in July, 1891. She attended the Belding high school and was graduated in 1895, being chosen presinent of her class. She was an ambitious student and conscientious worker, highly respected by teachers and classmates, and nearly always stood at the head of her classes. After graduating she taught school for one year near Smyrna, then went to the University of Michigan in the fall of ’97 where she continued until last June. She took a position in the Belding public schools last September which she continued to hold at the time she was taken with her last sickness. Her death occurred Tuesday morning, December 26, at 7 o’clock, after an illness covering only ten days, from peritonitis. Every effort was put forth to stay the progress of the dread disease but without avail. Her constitution was never strong and she was too ambitious for the good of her health. She was a member of the Congregational church and active in Sunday school and C.E. work. The funeral services take place today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Congregational church, Rev. J.J. Staley and Rev. R.A. McConnell officiating. The pall bearers will be Arthur Gibbard, Traverse City, Will Peck, Ionia, Earl Vincent, Howard Hall, Byron Brown, Ellis Ranney. This is the first break in a family circle which consisted of father, mother and nine children. They have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
