J. Henry Waidelich, 57 year old farmer, living in the southeast part of Easton township met a tragic and terrible death Monday morning when he died of burns suffered Sunday afternoon when he attempted to stamp out the flames of a brush fire on his farm and which he feared were about to spread into a field of wheat which adjoined the spot where he had been burning brush. Waidelich died at the Ionia hospital early Monday. He had been rushed to the hospital following the tragedy at his home. The Easton man had been engaged in burning some brush and leaves and when he saw that the fire was spreading out and that in all likelihood it might get into a wheat field, he attempted to stamp the flames out with is feet. In some manner the fire caught into his pantlegs and the lower part of his body was soon a mass of flames and he was badly burned before members of his family succeeded in extinguishing the flames. Waidelich, although terribly burned about the lower part of his body was conscious at the time he entered the hospital and told the particulars as to how the accident occurred. Surviving are the widow, Alberta; a daughter, Lois, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Harley of near Woodard lake and Mrs. Claude Herring of Grand Rapids, and a step-sister, Mrs. Wesley Alderman of Jackson. Funeral services were held at Ionia Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. Duncan MacPhee pastor of the Ionia Free Methodist church, officiating, and burial was in Easton cemetery.
