August 19, 1948 Three Electrocuted Near L.O. Friday Delbert Meyers, Lyle Waldren, and Elmer Shellenbarger, well known local men, were electrocuted on the Elmer Shellenbarger farm two miles south west of here about 5:30 Friday evening when the well derrick they were using came in contact with high tension wires. Herbert Shellenbarger, brother of Elmer witnessed the accident and called the local fire department. The local firemen took charge, roped off the area and called the Sheriff's department, the Coroner's office and Consumers Power to shut the line down. Meyer's son, Charles was standing near the rig when the accident occurred and was critically burned. He was taken to Pennock hospital in Hastings and is reported to be on the road to recovery. Herbert Shellenbarger told Deputy Cowels that the three men were killed when Waldren moved the truck forward and did not notice the derrick was touching the wires which carried 7,500 volts. He and Meyers then moved to the rear of the truck to crank the rigging down and were electrocuted. Elmer Shellenbarger saw what happened and gave his life in a vain attempt to save the other men.
