Belding man dies in lake

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (UPI) -  A 74-year-old Belding man died after falling from 
a boat into a northeastern Kent County lake Monday, despite the efforts of his 
78-year-old wife to pull him to shore.

Alvin Walker was pronounced dead on arrival at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center 
in Grand Rapids. Preliminary findings from an autopsy Tuesday indicate Walker 
died of a heart attack, a Kent County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

The couple’s three-person aluminum fishing boat capsized about 2:30 p.m. on a 
small, semi-private lake where they were fishing.

Nora Walker was able to pull her husband, who outweighed her by about 100 
pounds, to within about 50 feet of shore and kept him afloat while calling to 
family members on shore for assistance, police said.
