Wallace Dead. One More Pioneer Called Quite Suddenly Tuesday. Once again we are called upon to announce the death of one of those sturdy pioneers of this section, Mr. Nathaniel Wallace, who passed away at his home on the corner of Front and Washington sts., Tuesday forenoon from paralysis. The first shock was noticed Saturday, but it was not of sufficient force to prevent him from going about as usual. He grew worse however, rather than better, although he was down town Monday, and was out to his barn as late as six o’clock that evening. He began to fail rapidly after that and passed away as before said Tuesday forenoon. Mr. Wallace has been a resident of the city something like sixteen or seventeen years, having previously owned and operated a fine farm a few miles west of the city, he being one of the early pioneers of this section. He was a hard worker and a man of strong will, very positive in his convictions, and in consequence of these traits of character was not as popular as some other men of more pliable natures but was esteemed highest by those who had known him longest. By hard work and thrift he had acquired a competency, having built and owned the fine brick block on Main st. which bears his name, as well as owning considerable other city property. Mr. Wallace was born in Connecticut Aug. 11, 1822; and was therefore 79 years of age. He was married to the wife who survives him when he was 31 years old, but their union has never been blessed with any children. He also has two sisters residing in Detroit, and a brother at Morrison, Iowa. The funeral services were held from the house this morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. J.J. Staley officiating and the remains were taken to the Ashley cemetery for burial. Mrs. Wallace has for several years past been a great sufferer from rheumatism and on account of her own infirmities combined with this great shock is in quite a precarious condition herself.
