Walter, age 79, passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born May 31, 1934 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Harold and Nellie Walter. He moved to Pewamo, Michigan in 1948 and lived there the remainder of his life. He married Virginia Jean Pline on February 5, 1955 and they raised 5 children. Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He retired after 35 years of leadership service to General Motors, and worked for Standard Electric for 7 years. Don was a wonderful husband, family man, business leader, sportsman and friend. He had an exuberant personality that always brought out the best in everyone he encountered. Don is survived by his loving wife, Jean, his children Randy (Pat) Walter of Lawton, Gayle (Ted) Spitzley of Caledonia, Dawn (Marti) Thelen of Westphalia, Guy (Tina) Walter of Kalamazoo, Jon (Tammy) Walter of Nashville, TN, 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and brother Carl (Mona Lou) Walter. He was admired by his family and friends and set an example of what we should all strive to be. Don was preceded in death by his mother, father and sister, Belva Schneider. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 17, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, with Rev. Charlon O. Mason presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund, P-W Athletic Boosters, or Great Lake Caring Hospice, in memory of Don.
