June 15, 1933 LAKE ODESSA MOTHER OF MANY YEARS GONE Mother of Wilbur Walter Leaves Two Brothers, One Sister, Several Grandchildren and Many Friends, Funeral Monday The funeral of Mrs. Mary E. Walter was held Monday at the Methodist Church here. Mrs. Walter was a resident of this township for about sixty-five years. During these years she saw the forests turn into one of the finest farming sections of Michigan. She was the mother of only two children but lived to see several grandchildren who are being of much service in the world. One of these who might be mentioned is Mrs. Elgie Curtis who is most helpful in the grange and club work; Mrs. Gaylia Wade, another is one worthy matron of the local O.E.S. chapter. Her only living child is Wilbur Walter of this place. A daughter Mrs. Florence Huliberger-Alden died five years ago. Rev. A. T. Cartland officiated at the funeral and Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Goodemoot and Miss Helen Goodsell furnished the music. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery. OBITUARY Mary Elnora Barkdull was the eldest daughter of Enos F. and Mary Barkdull, pioneers in this part of Michigan. She was born at Rome, Richland county, Ohio, December 3, 1846, and passed away at her home on North Fifth avenue, Lake Odessa, June 10, 1933, aged 86 years, six months and seven days. She came with her parents to Michigan in 1868, and settled on a farm on the old Clinton Trail. This farm is known today as the Hiram Brundage farm. She shared the hardships and triumphs of a pioneer farm family, remaining with her parents until April 11, 1870, when she was united in marriage with Andrew A. Walter. After nearly 54 years this marriage was broken by Mr. Walter's death February 7, 1924. Two children were born to her, a daughter Florence who passed away about five years ago, and a son Wilbur Walter of Lake Odessa. She is also survived by two brothers; Hiram Barkdull and Thomas Barkdull of this village, and a sister, Mrs. James Morgan of Belding, besides seven grandchildren and other relatives and friends. As daughter, wife, mother and friend she lived her life meeting the duties and responsibilities of this life with a brave and cheerful spirit, trusting in God and cherishing the promise of a greater and better life beyond. "Sleep on, beloved, sleep and take thy rest; We loved thee well, but Jesus loved thee best. Good night!"
