Always there is sadness when death takes a dearly loved parent, in the fact that they never return to share our joys and sorrows or to receive our gratitude. The above father was a familiar personage in our town highly respected by all. He was tenderly cared for in his declining years by his wife and beloved by his children. As a citizen he was of a strong character, as a mechanic his work was always well done, being a carpenter by trade. George W. Walters was born November 25th, 1846 in New Lisbon, Ohio and departed from this life at his home near Lake Odessa, October 3rd, 1925, at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 8 days. When a young man of twenty years he moved with his parents to Michigan and located on a farm near Clarksville. In 1871 he was united in marriage to Jane A. Curtis, who preceded him in death, March 10th, 1896. To this union were born three children, Cora E. Bair of Detroit, Michigan, Mertie E. Johnson of this place and one son Harry, who died in infancy. The first fifteen years of his married life were spent on his farm in Odessa Township. Soon after the village of Lake Odessa was started he moved here with his family into his home on North Sixth Avenue. March 23rd, 1899 he was united in marriage to Susan A. Bennet. In 1907 he moved to his father’s farm to care for his aged father. After the death of his father he and his wife moved to their farm east of Lake Odessa where he resided until his death. Mr. Walter was a carpenter by trade. Many of the buildings of Lake Odessa and outlying districts were built by him. He was a man of strong character and a useful citizen and will be greatly missed from the community. The funeral was held at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. O. F. Bulman, preached and Mrs. W. C. McCartney, Mrs. M. M. Armstrong, David Leak and Wm. Chipchase accompanied by Morley Hough furnished the music. Burial was at Lake Side cemetery.
