Ward, 63, was found dead Sunday by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Gustafson, when they went to the home to spend the day with him. Mr. Ward had returned Saturday night from deer hunting, where he had met with some reverses to the pleasure. A lamp had been filled after dark with gasoline instead of kerosene and this exploded Friday evening burning the equipment, the deer carcass, much of his clothing and $50 in currency. At the time Mr. Ward complained of having inhaled an excessive amount of gas from the explosion and it is thought that this may have had something to do with his unexpected death. When Mr. Ward went north hunting, Mrs. Ward went to Milwaukee, Wis., to visit a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Garner, and did not know of her husband’s untimely arrival home, made so by the accident in the camp. He was born in Easton township and had always lived in the county with the exception of spending several summers in the interests of the conservation department about the state working in the fish hatcheries, but maintaining his home near Orleans. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. R. E. Karban Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home in Orleans township. Burial will be in Easton cemetery. He leaves no brothers or sisters, all having preceded him in death., but has an aged mother living in Chicago. The widow and these children survive: Hiram Ward, of Mason, Herbert Ward of Ionia; Mrs. Gustafson, of Ionia; Mrs. Elvira Evans, of Grand Rapids; and Mrs. Bernice Garner of Milwaukee, Wis. Mr. Ward was a gold star father, having lost a son, James, in the World War.
