Ward, aged 86 years, for many years a resident of Grattan and this city, passed away at five minutes to seven o’clock Sunday morning, following a period of poor health due to the infirmities of old age which had lasted over a number of years, during which time he was given every care and attention that loving hearts and hands could give him by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Ward, a nurse having been with him constantly during the past few weeks of his illness. Mr. Ward was born at Morristown, New York, in July 1844, and came to Michigan with his parents when he was but 5 years of age. When he was 17 years of age he enlisted in Co. D, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics and was one of the men who marched to the sea with Sherman. Two brothers of Mr. Ward’s were killed in the Civil war. In 1871 Mr. Ward was married to Josephine A. Unger and to this union one son, William R. Ward, was born. Mrs. Ward died in 1894 and since that time he made his home with his son and wife. Mr. Ward was for many years engaged in the business of stock buying and had a wide acquaintance in many parts of the state. Funeral services were held at the home on E. Congress street Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, with Rev. George A. Mooers, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating and the body was placed in a vault in River Ridge mausoleum to await burial in the spring.
