Congress St., passed away Sunday evening in St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids where she had been a patient four weeks. Mrs. Ward was born in Grattan township, August 31, 1879, the daughter of Asa and Sarah Jakeway. She attended Grattan school and graduated from that school from the tenth grade. She taught in Lessiter and Aldrich and other rural schools in that area. She was married to William R. Ward, November 28, 1899 and lived in Grattan until they came to this city in 1908. Mrs. Ward was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Confraternity of the Rosary Society and St. Cecilia Society; also a member of Jolly Washington Club, a member and past president of the Ladies Literary Club. Her survivors besides her husband are two sisters, Mrs. Elma Miller of Wayland and Mrs. Mildred Buete of Sparta and one brother Earl Jakeway of Flint. The Rosary was recited at Huffman Funeral Home, Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 o’clock at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Charles Steves officiating and burial was in St. Joseph’s cemetery. Pall bearers were Al Cichy, Sylvester Dehn, Frank Engemann, Albert Honson, Robert Wood and William Engemann. --------------- Mrs. Velma M. Ward, 76, 209 E. Congress St., Belding, died Sunday evening, October 13, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Grand Rapids. Mrs. Ward was born in Grattan Township and had lived in Belding since 1908. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the St. Cecilia Group. Surviving are her husband, William; two sisters, Mrs. Elma Miller, Wayland and Mrs. Mildred Buete, Sparta, and one brothers, Earl Jackway, Flint. Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph’s church. The Rev. Fr. Charles Steves officiated and interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The rosary was recited Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. at Huffman Funeral Home.
