Julia was born on Nov. 12, 1927, on the Michael and Catherine (Casey) McCarthy/Riley Homestead in North Plains Twp. west of Hubbardston in Ionia County to William T. and Margaret M. (Egan) Riley. Julia attended the rural Blackmer school until the fourth grade, and then Hubbardston St. John the Baptist Catholic School, graduating in 1945. She received her certificate attending County Normal in Stanton and taught at Cutler School Keene Twp. In Ionia County. In 1946, she married Fred J. Kohagen from Pewamo, son of Frederick C. and Veronica (Goerge) Kohagen. Julia and Fred had six children together and were married 15 years until his sudden death in 1962. She married Arthur J. Fox from Pewamo in 1967, the following year they had a son who died at 6 weeks of age. Art died suddenly five days later. She took work in 1968 in the kitchen of the Carson City Hospital and later was hospital dietitian and retired in 1989. She married Paul J. Ward of Greenville in 1991, and he died in 1996 after battling cancer. She is survived by six children and their spouses, Roger (Colette) Kohagen, Fred and Patsy Kohagen, John and Rose Kohagen, Dan and Linda Kohagen, Julie Kohagen, and Kathy and Jerry Waldron; 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Walt and Barb Donohue of Perrinton, and Leonard Miller of Ionia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Fred, Arthur and Paul; infant son David Michael Fox; daughters-in-law, Colette Kohagen and Joyce Kohagen; and siblings Irene and Jed Vance, Thomas and Hazel Riley, Leo Riley, Kate and Ken Miller, Wilma Miller. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Marys Catholic Parish in Carson City with Fr. Tom Thompson celebrating. Interment will be in Maryknoll Cemetery, Carson City. Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service and rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City. Her wishes in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Montcalm/Ionia County Intermediate School District Wm.Seiter Center for students with special needs, or MidMichigan Home Care Hospice.
