She was born July 9, 1918 in Comstock the daughter of the late George and Mina (Davis)Clarke. From 1920 to 1927 she lived in China with her parents who were serving as Seventh Day Adventist missionaries. From 1928 to 1937 she lived in Williamburgh and attended Elk Rapids High School, where she graduated as salutatorian of the class of 1937. From 1937 she began attending Ferris Institute in Big Rapids, where she graduated in 1939. She married Carl A. Ward in Dighton on August 2, 1940. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1980. The Wards moved to Grant Township area in 1943 from Battle Creek and owned and operated Carl’s Friendly Service. She was a life long Seventh Day Adventist member of the Manistee Church since 1943. She has served as treasurer of the church for more than 41 years. Betty is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Jessie and Richard Baker of Ionia, and Georgia Jean and Merlin Hickman of Bozeman, Montana; grandchildren, Vicky Manning, Scott Baker, Jennie Hunter, Tasha Driggs and Jason Cooper, 10 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann Clarke of Battle Creek; Jean Wilson of Crystal and Marjorie and Melbourne Smith of Rogers City. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was also preceded in death by her son, George. Funeral serves were held March 11, 2003 at the Manistee Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Jeff Bergquist officiating. Burial in the Grant Township Cemetery.
