Jan. 16, 2021 James Bernard Ward, age 85, of Muir, Michigan, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. He was born to Tom and Alice (Wiggins) Ward on October 6, 1935 on the family farm in Muir, Michigan. On February 14, 1986, he married Cherlyn Houserman in Ionia. James went to school at St. John the Baptist School in Hubbardston, Michigan, where he graduated and went on to work his own farm and at Mitchell Bentley. In 1960, James went to work for the Department of Corrections at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia, which he retired from on October 8, 1986, as an Inspector. James also farmed and ran the Muir mail route while working at the Reformatory. He also owned the Standard Station in Hubbardston from 1980 to 1991. James was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge in Ionia, and he enjoyed visiting the Hubbardston American Legion with his wife. James was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bruce; son, Dennis; granddaughter, Melissa Hunter; sisters, Blanche Kruger, Jean Smith, Donna Ward, and Margaret Cunningham; and brothers, Max Ward, Robert Ward, and Leon "Buck" Ward. He is survived by his wife, Cherlyn Ward; daughters, Donna (Tim) Schafer of Muir, Brenda (Bob) Porter of Manton; sons, Ron Ward of Lansing, Robert "Red" Ward of Hubbardston, John Ward of Hubbardston, Anthony Ward of Carson City; step sons, Michael Hunter of Ionia, and Anthony (Tammy) Hunter of Lyons; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 11, 2021 at 12:30 pm at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Hubbardston, with Fr. Darrel Kempf officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at Lux Funeral Home, Carson City, and also on Monday at the church from 11:30 am until the time of service. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the Church is limited to a capacity of 90 people. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or the Hubbardston American Legion Post 182.
