Ward, age 81,passed away Thursday, July 6, 2006 at his residence. He was born on May 5, 1925 in Ionia. Ken was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church and the Portland Masonic Lodge. He was a volunteer member of the Portland Fire Department as well as the Manager of the D.P.W for the City of Portland. He served on the City Council and is a veteran of the United States Navy. Ken enjoyed camping and the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia, a baby daughter, mother and stepfather Edna and Olin Smith and sisters Lillian (Ries) Huizenga and Mildred Jewel. Surviving are sons Michael (Diane) Ward of Portland and Douglas (Rita) Ward of Stanton; grandchildren: Todd (Denise) Ward, Troy Ward, Heather (Brett) Steinbacker, Sara Ward, and Timothy Ward; great grandchildren: Chandler Ward, Evan and Brayden Steinbacker; brother, Louis (Sondra) Ward; Sister-in-laws Rose Moon, Martha Schwartz, and Kay (Burton) Taylor; brother-in- laws Claude (Margaret) Thomas, Richard (Delores) Thomas, and Leo (Carolyn) Thomas; special friend, Nellie Canterbury; Friend and Neighbor, Alex Scheid. The Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Gregory R. Wolfe at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2006 at the Portland United Methodist Church, 310 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will follow in Balcom Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland.
