His mother, Mrs. Mary E. Ward, has given three of her sons to her country. Two of them, Will and Lee, are now in training at Camp Custer, while Vincent had been in France for some time. Peter John Ward, a fourth son, who is still in Portland, is on the limited service list and likely to be called at any time. Vincent was a member of Co. D., of Ionia, but was held in quarantine at Camp Merrett, N.J., when his comrades sailed. It was several weeks before he joined them in France. The department’s telegram says he was killed in action July 31st. Guy Stanton, Isaac Boursaw, Corp. John Leskey and Corp. Wm. C. Lemke, also members of Co. D, were killed on the same day, telegrams to this effect having reached their relatives. It is becoming clear that the boys from our own county played a prominent part in the initial drive which started the Germans for their own soil and they have doubtless been in many of the drives that have been made since. Vincent Ward was born in Sebewa township and would have been 23 years old last Wednesday. He enlisted with the Ionia company and about the time the start was made for Waco was made corporal. His mother, who resides on Grant street, opposite the home of F. C. Hathaway, is in poor health and the news of her son’s death has not improved her condition, though friends have tried to comfort her. Vincent’s father, Peter J. Ward, died several years ago.
