Investigating officer, William Tompkins of the Ionia state police post said Percy Ward, whose farm is the first one south of the intersection of Portland and Jackson roads, had told his wife, Bessie, he was going out to shoot a stray tom cat which had been bothering some kittens at the farm. Mrs. Ward said she heard a shot at about 1:20 and thought her husband had shot at the cat. A short while later, Mrs. Ward said, she went out to the barn and found her husband lying prostrate near the barn door. She then called a Saranac physician who said Ward was dead when he arrived. Coroner Neil Phelps said Ward died of wounds as the result of an accidental shooting. Trooper Tompkins said Ward’s body was found near the barn door and the Jackson road farmer had apparently been in the basement and started to climb the ladder with the cocked shotgun in his hand. Tompkins said as Ward reached the top of the ladder the gun fired and he fell forward on the barn floor while the shotgun dropped to the bottom of the latter. The body was taken to the Morris funeral home in Saranac. Percy R. Ward, 65, died Tuesday at his home in Boston township. He was born in Richmond March 12, 1896. Surviving are his wife, Bessie of route two, Saranac; two daughters, Mrs. George Boyko of East Lansing, and Mrs. William Rav Cox of Saginaw; a son, Farrand Ward of Linden, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Fuerstenau of Richmond. Service will be conducted at Morris funeral home Friday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Howard E. Bull.
