John Ward, who died at Portland on the 9th inst., was a son of Wm Ward, one of 
the early settlers in Easton, where the youthful days of John were spent.  
There were seven children in the family, of whom the only survivor is Mrs. 
Olive Hawley of Manistee.

John Ward learned the tailor’s trade, and was for about 14 years a resident of 
Ionia, working at one time for R. Hudson & Son, then for Sherman & Mills, and 
for a considerable time in business for himself.  He enlisted from here in the 
16th infantry, in August, 1861, and served until close of war – nearly four 
years, coming home with the rank of lieutenant.

He was married in 1853 to Miss Elizabeth Putnam of Battle Creek.  Soon after 
returning from the war, he moved with his family to Portland, going with Smith 
& Hudson (Los G. Smith and Jas. Hudson) as their tailor, when they opened a 
clothing store there.  Portland continued to be his home to the time of his 
death, where during recent years he carried on business on his own account, 
until his health failed.  He was a thoroughly honorable man, having the 
reputation of being strictly reliable in all his dealings, and he was highly 
esteemed in the business community and by citizens generally.

He leaves a wife and one child, Frank E. Ward, clerk of State Reformatory in 
this city.  His age was 72, but he looked much younger, even while his health 
was feeble.  He visited his son here in October last, and his youthful 
appearance was a subject of remark.

The funeral service took place at Portland on Sunday, conducted by Rev. 
Millard, of whose church decedent was a member in Marshall, 47 years ago.  
Burial was in Portland, under auspices of the Masonic fraternity.
