He attended the Grove school and was a member of the Young People’s Bible class of the Dildine church. He answered the call of his country on July 18, 1917 and after a few weeks in Ionia went to Grayling with the Co. E. boys on August 14th. They went to Waco, Texas, the first of December and sometime in the spring he left for “Somewhere in France,” after being separated from most of his companions on account of the quarantine. Word from the American Red Cross stated that he was wounded October 7, 1918, while fighting in the Meuse, Argonne and died the day following at the age of 21 years, 3 months and 10 days. He was buried in an American cemetery, but was returned to this county August 25 at the request of his parents for final burial in the family lot at Easton. He leaves to mourn his loss his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Ward, two brother, Hiram of Easton and Herbert of Ionia and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Evans, of Ionia, and Mae and Bernice at home besides a host of other relatives and friends. We wish to thank our neighbors, friends, Rev. R. E. Meader, the singers, all military and other organizations for flowers and assistance, given us at the burial of our returned heroe’s body. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Ward and family. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/w/ward9688nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
