He was born Oct. 22, 1925 in Ionia, the son of Paul and Edna (Olney) Warden and was a lifelong Ionia resident. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1943 and immediately entered the U. S. Army. He was employed as an apprentice machinist at Ypsilanti-Reed, the Ionia Co. Road Commission, Williams Bros. Construction and as Chief Estimator for Rieth-Riley Construction for 14 years before retiring in 1987. He was married on Aug. 28, 1947 in Ionia to Phyllis Jean McNaughton, and she preceded him in death July 16, 1986. He was an ardent sports fan, a star pitcher in high school baseball, one of the first 4-letter Ionia athletes lettering in baseball, football, basketball and tennis. He played baseball for many years and also coached Little League for 10 years. He was an avid golfer and bowler, a life member of the Ionia Elks Lodge #548 and a member of T.P.A. He is survived by two sons, Robert Warden of Ionia and James (Susan) Warden of Fenwick; three grandchildren, Sean Warden, Renee (Dan) Spicer and Jamie Warden; one sister, Carley Mae VanHettloo of Belding; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Bradford and Marilyn (Don) Cory, both of Belding; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Shirley Mellinger of Ionia. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Cook Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Rich St. Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice.
