March 2, 1944 CLARENCE WARDLE SUCCUMBS SAT. TO LONG ILLNESS Was Long Time Leader In Ionia Civic and Fraternal Affairs Clarence B. Wardle, 88, prominently identified with Ionia business life for many years, died at his home, 314 Lafayette Street, at 4:30 Saturday afternoon, February 26. He had been ill for more than four years. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, September 8, 1855, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George S. Wardle. He came to Ionia in 1876, where he read law with Judge Smith. Later he attended University of Michigan and graduated from its law school in 1878, when he was 23 years old. Although a member of the Ionia County Bar Association he did not carry on tin the legal profession but became interested in insurance and real estate which business he followed until his retirement some years ago. In addition to his interests in the insurance field, Mrs. Wardle was prominently associated with Ionia's early industrial growth. He was a director of the Ionia Wagon Works, The Michigan Clothing Company, president of the Ionia Free Fair Association, and in more recent years, its honorary president. For three terms Mr. Wardle served Ionia county as circuit court commissioner. He was a member of the Ionia Lodge, B.P.O.E., No. 548, the University of Michigan club and the Ionia County Hunting and Fishing club. In October, 1888 he was united in marriage with Miss Gertrude Townsend, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Townsend. Mrs. Wardle died in January 1921 and in September 1926 he was married to Miss Sue Townsend. The second Mrs. Wardle died about six years ago. Mr. Wardle had traveled extensively. He made three complete trips around the world. The first trip he made alone and the last two with Mrs. Wardle after his retirement from business. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R. Emmett Shanahan of Grand Rapids and Mrs. H.S. Bradley, of Evanston, Ill., a grandson, Charles Bradley, also of Evanston and one sister, Miss Jessie E. Wardle of Detroit. Rev. Henry A. Hanson of St. Johns Episcopal church officiated at the funeral service held from the Wardle home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. As a mark of respect to Mr. Wardle, Ionia business places were closed during the funeral hour. Pall bearers were Montgomery Webster, Fred Mason, Henry F. Voelker, K.R. Smith, G. Lee Yates and Dale K. Jepson. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Murrell Jinks and Mrs. Charles Lee. Burial was in Highland Park cemetery.
