His death came shortly after the close of the annual meeting of the Baptist church, of which he was the oldest member from the standpoint of age and the second oldest member from the point of years of affiliation, and which he erected. He had served the church as a deacon and as a trustee. Mr. Waterbury was born in Renssalaer county, new York, November 25, 1838, and came to Ionia county with his wife when 26 years of age, two years after his marriage. This was shortly before the outbreak of the Civil war and when Ionia had but 1,100 inhabitants. For over 40 years he had lived in the same ward and in the same home that he erected. This was built during the era of larger houses. It is of three stories and includes a luxurious winding staircase of cherry. He was a contractor by profession and among the buildings that stand out as a monument to his painstaking study are the Morse-Babcock block, the Episcopal church, and the State hospital. In addition to these and many others he supervised the erection of the Baptist church, the Masonic temple, Richardson silk mills, Belding, Hall refrigerator plant at Belding; the bank at Stanton, the Winter hotel at Greenville, and the Muir hotel. After he retired from the activities of his work, he spent many hours fashioning toys for children and has been known to spend hours in carving a toy for some child. There is many a person grown to maturity since he retired from business who will cherish kindest thoughts for this man who made life for them sweeter through his acts of kindness. He is survived by three children, Orry Waterbury, Jr., of Lansing, Mrs. Herbert Powell, of Ronald and Miss Della Waterbury, at home. Mrs. Waterbury died in 1918. Rev. F. J. Fitch will conduct the services from the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
