Waterbury, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Orry Waterbury, who departed this life on Thursday, August 25, at 3:30 p.m. He was born in this city, on November 12, 1874, and here grew to manhood. Here he attended the public schools, made excellent progress by characteristic persistence and faithful attention to his studies, and at the age of 19 years graduated with acknowledged honors. In the meantime he had developed his musical talent, and had shown considerable ability as a violinist; so much so, indeed, that he at one time seriously considered making music his chosen profession. Deciding on a business career, however, he entered the Poucher Business college in November, 1893, and remained six months and demonstrated a marked aptitude in this line. The following two years were spent in the employ of C. B. Derthick and in his father’s office. In the spring of 1896 he went to Chicago and entered the employ of R. B. Cronk. Six months later, in company with Mr. MacClaran, succeeded to this business, which assured a steady and permanent income. On June 30, 1897 he was married in this city to Louise, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Morrison, and took his bride to their newly furnished home at Downer’s Grove, one of the suburban towns of Chicago. Then followed a few months of unalloyed happiness, interrupted only by the fatal illness which ended his life. Long days, weeks, and months of suffering and pain in hospital and parental home were borne with that heroic endurance and fortitude that marked another trait of his noble character. Of loving and genial disposition, with integrity and uprightness in all dealings, and exemplary habits, he was a model young man whose death this community will deeply deplore. He united with the Baptist church of Ionia when sixteen years of age, and when he came to face death did so with that same energy of purpose which distinguished him in other lines of work, he set about making preparations to meet his maker, God, in peace, and the last few weeks of his life were marked with so much submission, hope and confidence, as to leave no doubt of his acceptance in the minds of those who watched by his bedside. The funeral services were held at the home of his parents on North Jefferson street on Sunday afternoon, and were very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. E. M. Jeffers, who was assisted by Rev. G. C. Moore, pastor of the Baptist church at Downer’s Grove, Chicago, and Rev. H. J. Powell of this city. Misses Hearsey, Benedict, McMullen, Allured, and Freeman sang his favorite hymns. Clinton Beals, Archie Benedict, Willie L. Peck and Fred Grimmer acted as bearers. The floral decorations were most elaborate and beautiful, being furnished by the Ionia City band, church, and many relatives and friends of deceased. The Ionia City band, of which he was a member when a resident here, with sweet and solemn music, escorted the procession to Oak Hill cemetery, where his precious dust now lies in the full hope of a glorious resurrection. The deceased leaves to mourn his untimely death, a young wife and infant son, father, mother, brother, two sisters, and a wide circle of friends.
