All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Patricia Currigan currigan1932@concast.net February 28, 2025, 11:40 am Lake Odessa Scrapbook - February 1890 This week we are called upon to record the death of two of our citizens with whom we have all been familiar, and who, but a few days ago was among us, and little thought that so soon they would be called to another world.The fact that they were both soldiers in the late rebellion and members of the G.A.R. makes their loss keenly felt, by the members of that order who as time on year by years, see their ranks grow thinner and thinner, and at each roll call some comrade fails to answer to his name.The first to answer the summons last week was. THOMAS N.WATERMAN Died Sunday morning, Feb. 2nd, 1890, aged 48 years 1 month and 13 days of a severe case of la grippe brought on by exposure. Mr.Waterman was born in Naples, Ont.Co.N.Y. on the 19th day of Dec. 1841. He enlisted in the late rebellion Sept 14th, 1861, in Co.G.17th Reg. N.Y. Vol.He was afterwards transferred to the 146th N.Y.Inf.And served a little over three years.He came to Michigan in 1872 and located in Hillsdale County where he married Miss Poly A Mallery in 1874. About a year afterwards he moved to Eaton Co. where he lived 13 years.He moved two years ago and has done teaming most o f the time.His wife remained on their place in Eaton Co. a part of the time.Mr.Waterman was taken sick last week Sunday, procured some medicine and Monday morning thought he was able to go to work.His wife who was here at the time advised him not to, but he did. Wednesday forenoon Mrs.Waterman went to Eaton Co. to close up some business there and Mr.Watterman was brought home at noon from the woods where he had been hauling wood quite sick, but it was supposed to be nothing serious. He continued to grow worse and Saturday noon Fred Fellows was sent after Mrs.Watterman but nothing serious was yet apprehended and as the drive which Fred had to make was 20 miles over the rough roads it was thought that she should not come back until Sunday. He arrived there about 6 o'clock in the evening and after supper Mrs.Watterman determined to come home at once, arrived here at two o'clock Sunday morning and just three hours before her midnight and never woke again. His health had been poor ever since, he left the Army. He leaves a widow. The funeral took place Tuesday at the M.D. Church:Rev. Sedwick charge of the services at the cemetery.
