W. R. Waters of Pewamo died suddenly Saturday, July 25, while sitting on his front porch. He had been around town during the day and was feeling unusually well. When his wife came from the house she noticed his peculiar position in the chair and called to him, but received no response. Upon investigation it was found that he had died from heart failure. Deceased was born in Newport, Momothshire, England, April 13, 1846. Being left without a mother before two years of age, he was taken by his grandparents with whom he lived until grown to manhood. When about eight years of age, God touched his tender heart, by the influence of the Holy Spirit, and he felt himself a great sinner, going by himself in an open field, there he wrestled with God in earnest prayer, and like Jacob of old, prevailed and found sweet peace in believing in Jesus Christ his Savior. At the age of thirteen years he made a public profession of religion and united with God’s people in Commercial Road Baptist chapel, Newport, England. Soon after his conversion he felt called of God to preach the gospel and immediately began the preparation for his life work, and when fourteen years old he preached his first sermon at Baslick. His college course was completed in the northern part of England. He was married to Miss Louisa J. Newman in 1867. To them were born eight children, six girls and two boys. Rev. Waters came to America in 1884 and settled first in Nova Scotia, and has been continuously in the pastoral work since then. He came to Lyons in 1895, where Mrs. Waters died on October 25th of the same year. In April 1897 he was married to Mrs. Elsie Travis, who survives him. In May 1895 he received a unanimous call to become pastor of the two churches, Lyons and Pewamo; this union continued one year when the Lyons church withdrew. Pastor Waters remained with the Pewamo church until January 1900 when he removed to Mt. Morris. In December 1905 he again became pastor of Pewamo Baptist church and remained its worthy pastor until God called him. The funeral was held in the Baptist church at Pewamo, Wednesday afternoon, July 29. The services were conducted by Rev. E. E. Branch of Ionia assisted by Revs. H.W. Powell, V.K. Beshgetoor and H.E. Wylie. Interment in Lyons cemetery.
