Aug. 17, 1888 CLARKSVILLE – Correspondence of THE STANDARD. On Friday night, August 8th, at about 10 o’clock, the west bound train from Detroit, on the Grand Rapids, Lansing & Detroit Railroad, ran on to Fred M. Watson, night watchman at what is known as the “sink hole” two miles east of Clarksville, instantly killing him. From the statement of the engineer, it appears Watson was lying on the road with his head on one rail, and the body across the track. He was not discovered until the locomotive was within thirty feet of the body – too late to stop the train in time to save his life, if living. A coroner’s inquest was held by Justice Scoville, the jury finding that Watson came to his death by his own carelessness, in lying on the track of the road and falling asleep. The body was carried a distance of over 130 feet from the place of the collision, and was mangled in a most horrible manner, the head crushed into an almost shapeless mass. Watson has lived here but a short time and little is known of him in this community, previous to his coming. He was about 30 years of age, and it is supposed, came from Ohio, as his mother and a brother are living at Tallmadge in that state.
