George W. Webber was the scene of a gathering of sorrowing relatives and friends Thursday afternoon, assembled to pay a last tribute of respect to this distinguished and universally respected citizen. The remains were encased in a massive casket of solid mahogany, the same being beautifully mounted in gold, and hand carved. The surroundings were masses of the most beautiful flowers which filled the large rooms with their fragrance. The music was touching and harmoniously rendered by Mrs. L. P. Brock, Miss Laura Thompkins, H. L. Baker and R. W. Wilson, members of the Presbyterian choir, and the sermon, or in fact the very appropriate remarks, were by Rev. J. T. Oxtoby, D.D., of the Presbyterian church. The sentiments expressed by Dr. Oxtoby were beautiful and the references to the deceased were eloquent and most fittingly applied. He referred feelingly to Mr. Webber as a man of the greatest energy, whose life had been the example of the highest honor and greatest success. The bearers were nephews of deceased—Messrs. J.A. Webber, J.T. Webber, W.A. Webber, S.W. Webber, jr., H.B. Webber and Chas. H. Webber, and the remains were laid to rest in a vault in the family lot in Highland Park, a beautiful spot overlooking the Grand river. A most fitting testimonial of esteem was the action of all of Ionia’s businessmen in closing their doors during the hours of the funeral, from 2 until 4 o’clock. Many of them gathered at the house to pay their last respects to their departed and honored fellow townsman, in whose demise Ionia loses one of its best benefactors. The board of directors and cashier of the State Savings bank attended in a body.
