Samuel W. Webber died Saturday evening at his home in Lyons, aged 78. Mr. Webber was one of the best known business men of the state, his career as a successful farmer, banker and capitalist being well known. He has been a resident of Lyons since 1859. He was born in Newbury, Vt., May 25, 1823, being one of six brothers. His youth was spent on a farm in Stuben county, N.Y. June 27, 1846, he was married to Miss Marietta Bowen, who died in 1859, leaving two sons. He came west [unreadable line] Portland, being engaged in agriculture for four years. Shortly after his wife died he sold his Portland farm and (in 1859) moved to Lyons where he has since resided. Subsequently he engaged in general mercantile business and farming, increasing his farm of 169 acres to 700 acres. In 1868 with his brother, George, he opened a private bank at Muir, becoming sole owner of that bank four years later, and since that time he has continually engaged in banking, holding interests at the time of his death in several Michigan banks, including the Ionia County Savings bank, of which he was a director, Webber’s bank at Lyons, and private banks at Muir, Pewamo, Rochester, Mt. Pleasant and Newaygo. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/w/webber7037gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ File size: 1.8 Kb
