Oliver Webster, held at the family residence, at 2:30 yesterday afternoon was largely attended by the life-long associates and friends of decedent, the limits of the large house being tested to the utmost. The remains reposed in a black broadcloth casket, in center of parlor, the bearers being grouped in a circle around same, and the members of bar in a larger circle enclosing the other. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, embracing set pieces from the Royal Arcanum, the Presbyterian church, his Sunday school class, and the Bar. The active pall bearers were Gen. J.H. Kidd, K.R. Smith, Fred Cutler, jr., Dr. E.F. Beckwith, A.J. Jackson, H.J. Horrigan, H.B. Webber, and E.T. Yeomans. The honorary bearers were members of the church board: Dr. W.B. Thomas, J. Fred Fisher, Judge M. Balcom, and Geo. D. Rauch. Rev. W.K. Spencer read appropriate selections of scripture, and preached a plain, simple sermon, fitting the occasion in its human feeling, and paying a just eulogy to the high character of deceased, without weakness of rhetorical extravagance to invite criticism. The music was by Mrs. L.P. Brock, Mr. and Mrs. Thane Benedict and Lee Yates, with Miss Fanny Gillett at the piano, the pieces rendered being “There is a Land of Pure Delight,” “Christians Good Night,” and “Lord, Lettest Thou Thy Servant Depart in Peace,” – selections by request of family friends. Relatives present from out of the city were Mrs. Flora Webster of New York state, and Mrs. Lizzie Bliss of Evanston. Judge Webster’s three surviving predecessors in the office, Judges Balcom of Berlin, Willett of Ionia, and Wilson of Saranac, were also present. Interment was in Highland Park.
