Heart disease was the cause of death. Judge Webster was one of the best known men in Ionia county and he had a wide acquaintance in Michigan and adjoining states as an attorney where he had appeared upon various occasions in the different courts on suits of greater or less importance. Mr. Webster had quite a lucrative law practice and for the past four years had been probate judge of this county and last month was reelected. For some time past, however, his health has not been of the best and his friends had been somewhat concerned about him, although he had said to them that he was feeling quite well. Mr. Webster was a thoroughly honorable, conscientious Christian gentleman of the old school, courteous always, kind-hearted and a most companionable man. He had been a resident of Ionia for upward of 35 years, and as counselor at law he had no superiors in Ionia and had for clients some of the largest concerns and richest individuals in Ionia and surrounding counties. An effort will be made to have his son, Montgomery, appointed to the end of the present term and to such time as a special election shall be held to choose Mr. Webster’s successor, and a petition will go, if it has not already been sent, to Governor Bliss to make such appointment. According to law a new probate judge must be elected at the coming April election. Deceased was 63 years of age and a native of New York state. He is survived by a widow, one son and two daughters, one of whom, Miss Ann, was his assistant in the probate office. He carried $8,000 in life insurance in fraternal societies. He was once defeated for Congress by Julius Houseman by 116 votes.
