Verne Weed, 59, died suddenly at his home in Grand Rapids on Thursday of last week. The son of Lake Odessa pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Weed, he was born in Woodland township, moved with them to Lake Odessa about 1888, was graduated from the local schools in 1902 and later from Purdue university. He was quite a versatile athlete during his school days being especially prominent as a racing cyclist. He “grew up” in the telephone business his father having established the first exchange in Lake Odessa. Following his graduation from college he continued in the telephone business being employed as manager of exchanges in New York state. Thirty-four years ago he became affiliated with the Michigan Bell Telephone company as an electrical engineer and was located at Grand Rapids where he was married and has since made his home. He had been seriously ill with heart trouble recently but had appeared to be enjoying a marked improvement in health when death came unexpectedly. He was a member of East Congregational church in Grand Rapids. Surviving are the widow, Fay, and a daughter Mrs. Dorothy Swift who is with her husband Lt. A. M. Swift in Florida. Funeral services were held Monday at the Metcalf chapel in Grand Rapids with the Rev. C. F. Goudey officiating. and burial was in Woodlawn cemetery there.
