Belding Banner-News, 19 Mar 1924

Born February 8, 1852, in Lowell, Michigan.  Was young lad when his parents
moved to the Cook’s Corners hotel which they operated for a number of years,
then moved to Greenville in the Sanders hotel.  It was while they were living
there that his father died.  Then the mother bought a farm at Cook’s Corners and
returned there.  In 1872 he married Elizabeth Slawson.  Three children, Guy, Ora
and Clare were born to them.  Rented the Slawson farm at Devine’s Corners for
several years and then bought a farm west of Cook’s Corners where they lived for
a period of ten years, moving from there to Belding where they lived
continuously, excepting three years in Greenville, until his death.  He bought
stock in Ionia and Montcalm counties for years.  His general good nature and
pleasant smile won for him a host of friends in the city and country.  He spent
Thursday afternoon, February 28, with Mrs. Weeks, calling on friends and
relatives in the neighborhood.  Visited until late in the evening with his son,
Guy, who happened to stop over night.  He was stricken early Friday morning with
paralysis, never regaining consciousness and died at 12 o’clock the following
Tuesday, March 4.  Many floral tributes were received from loving friends and
relatives.  Funeral, Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the M. E. church, Rev. George
Osborne, of Nashville, former pastor of the local church, officiating.  He
leaves his wife, two sons, Guy, of Plymouth and Clare, of Greenville and one
daughter, Mrs. L. M. Sagendorf, of Greenville. Ten grandchildren.
