Weeks, who endeavored to assist in the removal of goods from house of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph England. In doing so he was slightly suffocated by smoke, and considerably excited by the fire, and seated himself on a large stone in the yard suffering from a difficulty in breathing. His clothes were loosened and water applied to his face and he seemed to revive considerably, but ere many minutes he passed quietly away and was dead. The real cause was heart disease, indications of which he has had for some time. Mr. Weeks was born June 3, 1810, at Watertown, Mass. He entered the U.S. regular army at the age of 18, and served throughout the Seminole war in Florida, in various capacities, losing his left arm at the battle of Macanopa, Florida, in June 1836. The Indians respected his bravery so much that they would not kill him but used great efforts to capture him alive, but were unsuccessful. After this war he was stationed at various forts, etc., along the Atlantic seaboard, from New York harbor to Florida. His wife was with him through his campaigns, and while at Fort McRae, Florida, 1848-9, his eldest daughter, Julia, (Mrs. R. L. Hoge) was born. He came to Michigan via the Mississippi in 1849, and has resided in Hubbardston or vicinity for the past 25 years.
