William was born Oct. 11, 1953, to Kenneth and Joyce “Betty” Butcher Weiler in Sault Ste. Marie. He was raised mostly in the Belding area and surrounding towns. In elementary, he attended local public schools and graduated in 1971 from Ionia High School. On March 16, 1971, William joined the Army during the Vietnam War and served eight years doing border patrol in Germany, as a tank commander and also as a drill instructor. He was a sergeant when he retired. He attended college and took many training courses, mostly in motorcycle mechanics. On Sept. 25, 1988, William married the love of his life, Deborah Sue Packard, in their front yard. William was a state certified motorcycle mechanic and worked for a motorcycle shop in Portland for two to three years. He worked for Northland Corporation in Greenville for 19 years, and IEM in Ionia for two to four years. He was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, serving as assistant chapter director, chapter director, and was invited to be senior chapter director. He continued to work on motorcycles all of his life, riding his motorcycle with his wife and many friends. He also enjoyed sports and was a diehard Detroit Lions fan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; four children, Angela and Mike Laux of Ionia, Denise and Duane Baccus of Mount Pleasant, Demian and Sandy Bates of Grand Rapids, Sascha Bates of Minneapolis, Minn.; niece, Spc. Jessica Weiler; nephew, Timothy Weiler; five grandchildren, Eric Weiler and Michael Laux, Austin and Tavin Baccus, Zoey Bates; mother, Joyce “Betty” Butcher; father, Kenneth and Dixie Weiler; brothers and sisters, Joyce Weiler, Robin and Scott Fitzgerald, Bruce and Karen Weiler, and Jerry Weiler; first wife, Mattie Dean Bland Weiler, the mother of his children; and loyal dog, Buck. Services are from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Huffman Brigham Funeral Chapel, Belding. Visitation is from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
