June 7. 2016 WILLIAM E. WEISGERBER 1932-2016 William E. Weisgerber, after 84 action-filled years on earth, went to be with his Lord in the early morning on June 1, 2016, at his home in Ionia, Michigan. Bill was born on March 4, 1932, in Ionia to William L. and Bernice (Bradt) Weisgerber. Graduating in 1950 from Ionia High School, he was active in 4-H and FFA, achieving the American farmer's Degree. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict, and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia at a guided missile base. Home from the Army he attended college at Michigan State, studying Agriculture, and eventually earned his Master's degree in Education from Michigan State university. In June of 1959, he married Elinor Higbee, and they embarked on their life together, first on the family farm and then on to his professional career. Their busy lives included many adventures and travels with their family and friends. Bill began his distinguished 27 years career with the Michigan department of Education working in career Educational and retired in 1996 as the State Director of Career and Technical Education. During those years, he received many awards for his dedication to and belief in vocational education. In 1996, he was appointed by the White House tot h National Skill Standards Board. Bill served his community in numerous ways, including being on the boards of the Ionia County Memorial Hospital, the Ionia free fair, the Ionia county community Mental Health, and the Ionia County Road Commission, as well as filling the post oF Orange Township Supervisor. He was a life long member of the LeValley United Methodist church, serving on various committees throughout the years. When the Berlin-Orange Fire Department was established in 1973, he was an active volunteer aw well as the training Captain. More than once he received the award for being the best dressed to arrive at a fire! Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jo Smith; his parents, William and Bernice Weisgerber; and his nephew, David Smith. He is survived by his wife, Elinor; daughters Cathy Weisgerber of San Diego, California, Jan Hull of Caledonia, Michigan, and Lori McConnell of Oak Park, Illinois; sons-in-law Chris Hull and Will McConnell; and grandchildren Charlie Rogers, James McConnell, Ainsley McConnell, Danielle Mier and family, Victoria Siko and family, Chris and Caitlin Powell, and Kristen Hull. He is also survived by his nieces, Elizabeth Johncock, JoAnn Samson, Abby Hawkins and their families. A celebration of the life of Bill Weisgerber will be held at LeValley United Methodist Church, 4018 Kelsey highway, Ionia Michigan on Thursday, June 9, at 11 AM.
