In the death of Mrs. Sarah Ann Welch, which occurred at 4 o’clock Monday a.m. there is removed another personage connecting the present with the pioneer days of this community. Mrs. Welch was for many years one of the charming figures in the social life of the community, in the days when hearty hospitality was a much more marked feature in social life. Her maiden name was Sarah Ann Morgan, and she came from good patriotic stock. Her grandfather, George Palmer, too young to serve as a soldier, still did duty with the patriot army during the revolution, and her father, Captain Seldon Morgan, served as a member of the New York militia, as a soldier in the war of 1812. Mrs. Welch was born in New York state, April 15, 1817. She was married at Ilion, N.Y., to Amos N. Roberts, in 1838, and they soon afterwards moved to Grand Rapids. Three children were born to this union: James D., of Longton, Kan.; Mrs. Statira Remington, of Grand Rapids, and George, deceased. Colonel Roberts died after a short married life, and the widow was married to John B. Welch, of Ionia, in 1848. To this union were born four children, all living: Marcia, wife of John H. Hamilton; Mary wife of K. R. Smith, and J. Darius Welch, all of this city; and Amos M. Welch, of Ionia township. The latter occupies the old homestead farm, memorable as a milling point, and the scene of many social festivities in the early days, and where decedent made her home most of the time since her husband’s death. Funeral service will be held at this place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock.
